Dee King

As a lifelong photographer, I’ve always been fascinated by people and place, seeking out subjects, and causes, to tell their stories.

I choose available light, which can bring a serendipity in mood, and feel of a place. It allows for divine timing, with the interplay between light, and the shutter release, and can feel a little like an ever-evolving poem. Cartier Bresson, famously called it the ‘decisive moment”

I mostly choose a backdrop of colour for portraits these days, adding a layer of subliminal meaning. I like placing little “signs” within the frame. which prompts questions for the viewer. I feel enticed to capture landscapes, as they emerge on the horizon, as if like a dream or meditation. They’re often vibrant and high contrast, sometimes soulful and moody. Training 10 years ago, in colour psychology, led to my exploring further forms of visual art, and in particular painting, which has now become a regular practice. I work intuitively with shape, form and colour, the human form is a favourite, as is the natural world.
